Workplace health: Working Well East Midlands
Healthy eating
Poor nutrition can lead to heart disease, some cancers, diabetes, osteoporosis and bad oral health. It is also closely linked to obesity.
By promoting healthy eating, employers can improve staff morale and reduce absenteeism.
Employers can promote health eating in the workplace by:
- Ensuring corporate buffets are low in fat and sugar and offer fruit and vegetables
- Reviewing the sale of food on their premises and advocating healthy options
- Ensuring vending machines offer low-sugar drinks, water and fruit instead of high-sugar soft drinks, crisps, biscuits and chocolate
- Providing cooler and filtered drinking water
- Providing clean and appealing eating facilities to encourage employees to take a break from their workstation and eat in a hygienic environment
