Review of the Social Responsibility Standards for the production and sale of Alcoholic Drinks
- Volume 1

- Volume 3
This consultation is prompted by four new pieces of work that have highlighted concerns over alcohol misuse:
- The release of Hospital Episode Statistics on rising alcohol related hospital admissions
- Interim findings from a review of the effects of alcohol pricing and promotion showing:
- that price significantly influences young people and those drinking at heavier levels
- conclusive evidence of a small but consistent association between advertising and consumption at a population level. This is also a small but consistent effects of advertising on the consumption of alcohol by young people at an individual level.
- The first stage of monitoring of the voluntary code on the labelling of alcoholic drinks showing that on 57% of products contained information on alcohol unit content and only 3% contained the labelling scheme in its entirety
- The results of a KPMG study on the implementation of the voluntary code of Social Responsibility Standards for the Production and Sale of Alcoholic Drinks in the UK revealing a disturbing level of irresponsible and harmful practice in significant sections of the industry, along with limited evidence that the current social responsibility standards are consistently applied or effective in promoting good practice.
Further information on each of the studies can be found in the consultation document and supporting reports which can be accessed by the links on the right.
