Local Area Agreements Guidance on Food and Health
What we eat can make a big difference to our health and well-being. Diet
is thought to play a role in about a third of all deaths from cancer, and
about a third of deaths from coronary heart disease. This amounts to around
80,000 deaths each year. Obesity, a major public health issue for the 21st
century, is also estimated to cost the economy £2.5 billion a year. In
addition, there are around 850,000 cases of food poisoning in the UK each
year. This can cause serious illness and permanent disability, and some
types can kill.
This Guidance has been produced by the Food Standards Agency's East Midlands Office for use by
- GOEM negotiating teams when reviewing and refreshing existing LAAs
- Local Authorities and their partners developing LAAs or delivery plans when considering incorporating outcomes, indicators and interventions in relation to food.
It will also be useful in helping to see work done on food and health within a wider strategic context, for example in how it helps deliver PSA targets, and contributes to economic development and education as well as public health.
