Choosing Health inside and out

Date:

1 December 2005

Location:

University of Leicester

Aim:

Choosing Health set out the Government’s vision for improving the health of the population and addressing the inequalities that still exist. Enabling healthier lifestyle choices and community leadership are key components of that strategy.

The health improvement opportunities in Choosing Health exist as much for people in prison, their families and friends, and for the prison staff, as they do for society in general. Prisons are basically no different to any other community, but the population are more likely to come from backgrounds of high inequalities. This event will explore how those inequalities can be addressed within the prison setting and how the healthier lifestyles established on the inside can be maintained upon release.

In particular, the event will consider the following priority areas:

  • Supporting prisoners and prison staff to stop smoking
  • Improving the diet of prisoners and tackling obesity
  • Improving sexual health of prisoners
  • Improving prisoners’ mental health and wellbeing
  • Reducing the harms associated with drug and alcohol misuse
  • Promoting personal health for prison staff, prisoners and their families
