Diabetes and pregnancy: are we providing the best care? Findings of a national enquiry

Date:

26 February to 1 March 2007

Location:

  • Sheffield United Stadium, Sheffield (26 February)
  • Bescot Stadium, Birmingham (27 February)
  • The Barbican, London (1 March)
Description:

This conference will launch the final report of the Confidential Enquiry into Maternal and Child Health (CEMACH) national diabetes programme for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Key aspects that CEMACH has previously highlighted are the continuing increased risk of stillbirth, perinatal mortality and congenital anomaly for babies of women with diabetes, the increasing contribution of type 2 diabetes to diabetic pregnancy and its relationship to ethnicity and deprivation, women's poor preparation for pregnancy, patchy provision of preconception services and inappropriate routine separation of
mother and baby after delivery. The new report includes an overall concern that services as currently organised place too little emphasis on care prior to pregnancy.

There are also specific concerns about the impact of a number of demographic, social and clinical care factors on adverse pregnancy outcomes. There are a number of key recommendations for clinicians and policy makers within the NHS.

The conference will also include updates on service development and research initiatives and will provide the opportunity for discussion, networking and exchange of ideas.
