emphasis on physical activity
Key policies in the East Midlands
In the East Midlands, physical activity has been identified as one of five main policy priorities. These priorities are set out in the Regional Assembly's Public Health Strategy Investment for Health.
Objective 4 states the objective to:
“Increase the physical activity levels of East Midlands residents”
Key priorities for the Region are to:
- Establish baseline data collection and systems to monitor trends in physical activity levels within the region.
- Build the evidence base for physical activity interventions and establish dissemination networks to facilitate the sharing of good practice and develop the infrastructure to deliver this agenda.
- Improve partnership working and performance management arrangements to support the inclusion of sport and physical activity in strategic planning, nationally, regionally and locally.
- Advocate for the inclusion of physical activity in the core training and continued professional development of health, leisure and fitness professionals.
- Ensure that physical activity is included in the health impact assessment of regional planning guidance.
The lead organisation for this objective is Sport England (East Midlands) in partnership with a range of key agencies including the Health Development Agency, Dept of Health and the East Midlands Public Health Observatory.
Physical activity and healthy eating are identified as priorities because of their inter-relationship. Each is vital to maintain good health and help prevent circulatory disease and cancer. But together, they represent the only viable way to reduce the epidemic of obesity which is affecting the UK in general and the East Midlands in particular. In the Region, 25% of men and 32% of women aged 45-64 are obese: these are the highest levels in the country.
Closely linked to Investment for Health is the Regional Plan for Sport, which sets out how effective communication, good understanding and strong networks will be utilised to bring all the key players together to provide comprehensive sports development and increase participation levels.
